Meadow Maker combines two of my lifelong passions; design and nature. The decision to start Meadow Maker has been a long time coming, and initially grew out of a passion for native plants. When I decided that my path would involve native plants, design and floristry, I took a closer look at the floristry Instagram accounts I most admired; to me, the most beautiful designs were the ones that reflected nature…they didn’t have human precision and opulence imposed on them. They were interesting. Some looked moody, some looked playful, some looked like they were dancing. This gave me a new appreciation for floral design. Looking deeper still, I found that the designers of these accounts did not use floral foam, and were focused on sustainability. Until then, I had no idea how damaging the floral industry is for the planet.
Sadly, I could not find a program in the US that taught floral design completely sustainably, so I went to the UK, and immersed myself at The School of Sustainable Floristry in Bedfordshire. There I learned design, sustainable mechanics and practices, and flower farming.
At the school, so many of our designs incorporated ‘Cow Parsley,’ our American Queen Anne’s Lace. It was so joyful to pull these stems from their unending fields, and see how much light and air they added to the arrangements of ranunculus, peonies, lilacs, etc… I remembered back to being a young girl, thinking that Queen Anne’s Lace was beautiful, only to be told it is a weed. I didn’t understand that. I still don’t. Unless they are invasive, I believe all flowers are awe inspiring.
With the ease of flight and the invention of floral foam, the world has moved away from appreciating the natural beauty and simplicity of flowers to flowers that are engineered in other countries to have poker straight stems that fall into their floral foam places like soldiers. This isn’t natural or ethical. Undoubtedly the slow flower movement is gaining traction. Work with me if you want to be part of the solution.
